Hockey Pointers

By: Sofia Wagner

Hi, my name is Sofia wagner and I am this week’s blogger. I love to play hockey so I thought I would take you through to learn a little bit about it.

I started playing hockey when I was 8 and have loved it ever since. Hockey has been a big part of my life and I hope to show people how fun and interesting the sport is. Hockey originally started in Canada in the 19th century and has been popular worldwide ever since. There are many historical facts about hockey and it is cool to see how the sport has evolved over the years. Fact, no one is exactly sure when the sport of hockey started, there is only an estimated date and time that the first game of organized ice hockey was played in Montreal in 1875. Another fact is that the Stanley Cup has been around longer than the NHL. Like I mentioned, I love the sport.  I love to experiment with shots and different types of tricks so I thought I would show you a few in this video.

I hope you found my video interesting and that you learned a few new things about hockey that you didn’t know before. Thank you for watching.

Fishing, the Do’s and Don’ts

By: Mikey Conroy

Hello my name is Mikey and I am the blogger this week. I would like to share with you  some of the do’s and don’ts of fishing. This blog will tell you what to do if you are a beginner fisherman and don’t know exactly where to start. I am going to give  you three tips to help  to improve your fishing game.

First I’ll tell you what to do when you bring in the fish to unhook. When the fish is above water, lay it  down on a rock, sand, or whatever surface you are fishing on.   Grab  the fish to stabilize it so it doesn’t move around as much. If the fish has spikes on the top of it, put your hand at the start of his head and slowly move your hand over the spikes with enough force to keep them down. Finally, slowly  take the hook out of his lip and release. Here is what you don’t want to do…   When you have landed the fish, you never want to put it on the ground and rip the hook out of his mouth.  This will hurt the fish and maybe even damage your hook. You will also look unprofessional and could be kicked out of  your fishing spot, or even worse, lose your fishing license.

The second tip I have for you is what to do when a fish swallows your hook.  You need to have a pair of pliers and try as hard as you can to get the hook out of its bellie. If you are unable to remove the hook, then what you want to do is take your scissors and try to go as far down in the throat as you can to cut the line and release the fish. What you don’t want to do in this situation is try and rip the hook out if it’s bellie. This will cause pain to the fish and might kill the poor animal.

Lastly, let’s talk hooks.  The hooks you need to use for fish safety are circular hooks. The circular hooks prevent the fish from swallowing the hook.. Fish are also more attracted to circular hooks, so you will most likely catch more fish while also keeping them safe.  Strait hooks that curve at the end are easier for the fish to swallow and more dangerous for the fish.  Check out this video for a demonstration.

I hope after you read this blog, you will try fishing and use these tips I’ve provided for you. Fishing is one of the best hobbies that you can have and it is one of my favorite things to do so I really hope you use these tips and enjoy the sport as much as I do.

Fireside Treats for Everyone

By: Marley Hamilton

Hello my name is Marley and I am the blogger this week. I have decided to base my blog on campfire desserts. Over quarantine lots of people, including me have been going on lots of camping and RV trips. I have three easy recipes that I would like to share with you. They are very delicious to snack on while on a fun camping trip.

The first recipe is a yummy banana boat. A Banana Boat is a chocolatey, creamy, banana. I love this recipe so much. The first time I made this was when I went camping with my friend Olivia. We both thought it was  delicious and perfect to have on a camping trip. The next recipe is a Crazy Cookie, which includes a pile of cookie dough and your favorite candy. This is a nice doughy burst of cookie in your mouth. It is a really easy recipe and worth the wait. The third recipe is a Cinna-Bun Stick. This is your classic cinnamon bun but with a twist. It is just like roasting a hot dog on a fire but it is now a sugary treat. Click here to watch the video I created for your viewing pleasure incase you wanted to see these tasty treats come to life.

I hope you enjoyed these three creative treats. Hopefully these recipes inspire you to make some of your own. These are the perfect recipes to have on your next camping trip.  Thank you for checking out my blog.

The History of Snowboarding

By: Maddie Poppish

It started with a surfer that was looking for something new. Now, it’s a winter sport sensation around the world.

My name is Maddie Poppish, and I am here to take you through the history of snowboarding. It wasn’t the idea of snowboarding that occurred first; it was the snowboard itself. I’m the 1960’s, a man and surfer named Sherman Poppen designed and built a snow surfboard called the Snurfer. After going into commercial production, over a million Snurfers were sold by 1975. Around 1972, another surfer, Dimitrije Mochvich, started experimenting with iron edges and invented Windstick, a company that still produces snowboards today.

Unfortunately, snowboards were not allowed on the slopes; irritated managers would ask the snowboarders to leave. But, in 1977, Milovich got written confirmation that snowboards were, in fact, allowed on the slopes. This was a major step in the growth and popularity of snowboarding. Three men, Tom Sims, Mike Olson, and Jake Carpenter Burton (founder of Burton Snowboards) began to produce snowboards that very same year, but all of their snowboards were different; Sims created aluminum-bottom snowboards made of wood planks; Burton built off of Snurfers; Olson used planks of pine.

As the industry moved through the 1980’s, the design focus shifted from the actual board to designing bindings to make snowboarding easier. Today, bindings are key to controlling your snowboard.

Snowboarding soon found its way into some of the best competitions in the world. The 2014 Olympics showcased 12 new competitions for snowboarders. Today, snowboarders are seen at every ski resort and the best compete in the Olympics, the X Games, and more! And to think it all started with something called a Snurfer…

Guinea Pigs, Bunnies and…

How to really love your pets. by: Klara Geder

Hi my name is Klara, and I’m the blogger for the week. In this blog I will be talking about the care for rabbits and guinea pigs.

If you didn’t know, I love animals and I want to do my best to help my pets live their best life. I’ve had Pixie, a mini lop bunny, since August 1, this year, so I am a new rabbit owner. I’ve had a tuxedo, a guinea pig, since March when the quarantine began. I was only supposed to keep him for 2 weeks, but that turned into 6 months, so he is now part of my family.

Rabbits and guinea pigs have similar needs, with a few distinct differences, so I hope I can help future owners by pointing them out. I’ve made a video for you going over useful tips for rabbits and guinea pigs.  Click here and enjoy!

Rabbits and guinea pigs are definitely amazing pets, so I hope this blog was useful if you were considering an addition to your family.

The Persian Empire

The Persian Empire: By Jackson Sharpe

Hi, my name is Jackson B. Sharpe and my favorite subject is history, specifically ancient history.  I love learning about the origins of modern countries and the battles and strategies used to form the nations of the current world.

81.8 million people and 454 billion dollars, that’s part of the impact Iran has on the world today.  We have a man named Cyrus to thank for these contributions.  It all began back in 550  BCE.

In 550 BCE a man named Cyrus united the people of the Persian tribes and conquered the king of the Median Empire named Astyages.  Astyages controlled the tribes before Cyrus united them.   But it wasn’t until in 539 BCE when Cyrus defeated the mesopatanian state of Babylon in 539. In 480 BCE the Persians invaded Greece because Greece was helping rebels in Armenia. The first battle was fought at Thermopylae where the Greek city states united to take down the Persians. In the end Persia won the battle of Thermopylae but with heavy casualties and only won because a greek spy showed them a way behind the mountains.  Even though the Persians won the battle, the Persians lost the war with Greece and would never be able to expand into Europe again. These failed attempts to invade Greece weakened the Persian Empire.

In 330 BCE, Alexander the Great invaded Persia and conquered much of the Persian Empire but a small part of it was left intact.  Fast forward about 900 years to when Rome collapsed 476 CE and split into two with the west falling quickly and the east surviving until 1400 when the Ottomans took them over. Eastern Rome and Persia had been at peace for a while but when Eastern Rome stopped paying for the Cacastion Gates, they invaded. At this point what was left of Persia was on the brink of collapse and war is not good for empires on the brink of collapse. and surprisingly Persia won, and  got a lot of gold out of it. Meanwhile the Eastern Roman empire was also toying with Persias allies in Italy and in the Arabic peninsula. When the Persians found out they went to war and destroyed the Eastern roman empire but only taking small land amounts in exchange for money. Then their Turkish allies (in Turkestan) declared war on the Persia empire bringing it to an end. It is these lands that become Iran at the conclusion of WWI when the land that was Persia becomes known as Iran.

Though what’s left of Persia is left in ruins, it has left a huge mark on Iranian culture to this day. It had one of the oldest religions that is still used today. Also, it has made Iran the center of attention around the world. The Middle East, especially Iran, has had a huge mark on the world and it is thanks to the great Persian Empire. If you would like to read more on this interesting subject, visit my sources here.

Positive Thinking

Positive Thinking: By Grace McTighe-Tassinari

Hello people. I have done some research about negative and positive thoughts and their effects on the human brain.   I would like to share my findings with you today.

According to mayoclinic.org, positive thoughts can increase life span, decrease stress levels, improve resistance to the common cold, and reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

I did some research on ways to think positively and here are some I found on physiologytoday.com: if you listen to music, it activates the region of the brain that releases the feel good chemical dopamine and also relaxes your body!  Also, If you follow your passion and do something you want to do, it makes you feel happy.   If you find meaning in life, you are happier and healthier, and you live a longer, more satisfying life.

Listen up Bay Farmers, thinking positive is the key to life. Be it listening to music, singing, or hanging out with friends, go find your happy place and live a longer life. Everybody is unique, even Hugo the Minecraft zombie knows how to think positively and he is so excited the Middle School building is almost done!

Skateboarding

Skateboarding: by Giovina Segalini

Hey guys! Giovina here! I am going to be talking about skateboarding, because I am just fascinated with it. I am a surfer, so I truly am wondering about the difference between skateboarding and surfing. My family is a skateboarding family, but my brothers are learning at the moment, so I really needed a pro.

I grooved down to Uncle Bud skatepark in Marshfield and met a great skateboarder named Matt. I’ve seen him a few times there, so I asked him a few questions about skateboarding! I asked him about ten questions to hear what he had to say about it. One of the main questions that really got me thinking was about tricks. After all, skateboarding is a sport that includes tricks. When I asked Matt about tricks, he told me that he wasn’t focused on them as much as speed. I observed him skateboarding and he was ripping the walls by getting super high on the sides. At that moment, I wondered: If you had been skateboarding for 24 years, why haven’t you really focused on tricks. Why speed? He told me that he was 30 years old, which really got me thinking “why isn’t this guy wearing a helmet while he’s skating?!”

This guy did not wear a helmet. Matt even told me he broke his skull at the same skatepark. Most of the people I’ve met that skateboard (including my brothers) all wear helmets. Why did Matt not wear a helmet? Do you wear a helmet? Check out the full interview with Matt here!
